Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book?

Yes, please use our booking form to reserve your place on our Open Day. This enables you to receive specific event communications and reminders, as well as ensuring we can manage capacity in our department sessions.

What is the date and time of the event?

The event will take place on 27 June 2026 from 9:30am - 4:00pm.

Do I need to pre-book any sessions or college tours?

Academic department sessions will be available to pre‑book ahead of your visit, and we’ll notify you as soon as booking opens so you can plan your day. All other activities (including college tours) run on a drop‑in basis, so no pre‑booking is required.

Where is the event located?

The event will be located across our University campus. Further details of specific room locations will be released soon, and we will have staff members and Student Ambassadors located on site on the day wearing event T-shirts to help point you in the right direction. If you are stuck, please ask us!

Is the venue accessible?

Most of our campus is - however, if you have any specific needs, please provide details on the form and email for any advice pg.recruitment@durham.ac.uk.

Do I need to attend all of the event or can I pick and choose my sessions?

You only need to book onto as much or as little of the event as you would like to. Nothing on the schedule is compulsory, i.e. you could attend one (or more) of the department sessions/talks and the offer-making drop-in OR you could just attend the talks OR you could just attend the offer-making drop-in. The choice is yours!

Is the event for students exploring postgraduate taught or postgraduate research courses?

The offer-making part of the event is for students looking for a provisional offer for one of our PGT programmes, however, the Open Day itself is open to students interested in taught and research programmes. We will confirm which sessions are applicable for taught and research courses.

What is a provisional offer?

A provisional offer for a postgraduate degree is an offer of admission that is contingent upon submitting a full application and meeting certain conditions.

What happens once the provisional offer is made?

Your provisional offer will be emailed to you and will detail your next steps, your first of which will be to complete and submit a full application via the applicant portal. The Admissions Team will then do the normal application checks, and as long as these are ok, will then issue a formal offer to you via email and via your applicant portal. This offer may have conditions on it, i.e. completing your degree with a 2:1.

Do I need to have started an application before attending?

No, you don't need to have started a postgraduate application before you attend the event.

Will I get an offer on the day?

If you meet the entry criteria for your chosen postgraduate programme and your chosen programme does not require academic intervention, then you will receive a provisional offer by email on the day.

What if I change my mind and decide not to apply?

That's absolutely fine. Continuing your studies at postgraduate level is a big decision and if you change your mind at any stage of the process that is ok. You can simply choose not to begin the application or, if you have already submitted, then you can withdraw your application at a later date.

Why can I not gain a provisional offer for a PGCE programme?

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide a provisional offer for our Teacher Training programmes as the consideration for an offer requires academic intervention. However, you can book onto the department session to take a deep dive into our PGCE courses as well as gain admissions advice and interview tips and techniques.
